Australia Day is the Nation's Day to celebrate country and culture. It's a time to reflect on the achievements of our people, have fun, and to embrace the future of our nation. Australia Day celebrations in Gunnedah are iconic to our Shire and open with the Australia Day Awards dinner on Thursday night at the Gunnedah Town Hall. Gunnedah's 2018 Australia Day Ambassador, journalist Frank Coletta will present awards to community members and groups who have been acknowledged for their service, talents and community spirit.
Australia Day celebrations kick off with a triathlon at 7am, in and around Gunnedah's Heated Pool Complex. The official Australia Day Church Service and Citizenship Ceremony will be held from 8am under the gum trees on Donnelly Fields.
A free family sausage sizzle will be held before the famous annual Raft and Craft Race starts at 9am. The race begins at Cushan's Reserve and rafts of all shapes, sizes and designs float, bob and power down the Namoi River to Cohen's Bridge. By-standers can participate in Family Fun Games and Kid's Cross Fit activities at Donnelly Fields while they wait for the rafts to cross the finish line. Fire and Rescue NSW Gunnedah are also hosting demonstrations at the Woolshed Reserve. While at the Woolshed Reserve, stick around for the pet parade and see some of Gunnedah's furry, feathered, and scaly friends vie for a prize.
Lunch is available at many of the great hotels and pubs in Gunnedah with live music, yabbie races, eating competitions and more! Then it's time to relax in the air conditioning with a FREE screening of Blinky Bill from 2pm at The Civic.
