In Gunnedah, on the edge of town, you will find a free camp spot overlooking the Namoi River. To get to this spot you will need to head north in Chandos Street, just over Cohen’s Bridge, turn left onto the spacious grassy surrounds alongside the restful Namoi River. Relax a while and stay a few days, the area allows access to the river for swimming, fishing and canoeing and the location is home to native wildlife and a variety of birds so look up, you may spot a Koala snoozing in the river gums. (The area is dry weather only)
Free camping is also accessible at Red Bank Rest Area located 10 kilometres east of Gunnedah on the Oxley Highway north east towards Tamworth. Here you’ll find a large open grassy area with picnic shelter, toilets and tank water available.
There are 2 dump points in Gunnedah. One is located at the Lions Club Rest Area on Mullaley Road (Oxley Highway) and the other is located just inside the main entrance to the Gunnedah Showground, immediately on the left after entering through the gates in South Street (Oxley Highway).
